When Should I Change My Car Battery?

In the Philippines, a typical lead-acid battery lasts around 2 to 3 years, while AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries can last longer, around 4 to 6 years. But battery life depends on driving habits, heat and humidity, traffic conditions, and regular maintenance.

 

  • You should consider replacing your battery when:

  • Your engine struggles or is slow to start

  • You need frequent jump-starts (boosts)

  • Your lights or electronics flicker or act inconsistently

What Type of Battery Should I Use?

Always choose the manufacturer-recommended battery type for your vehicle.

  • Most Japanese vehicles (Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki) use standard lead-acid batteries.

  • Premium vehicles (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, etc.) often require AGM or OEM-spec batteries, which handle advanced electronics and deliver higher power.

How Do I Change My Car Battery?

We always recommend having a technician test your battery first. Sometimes the problem is the alternator, starter, or wiring—not the battery itself.

Tools & Safety Gear (if doing DIY):

  • Gloves and safety glasses

  • 10mm socket (common for Japanese vehicles)

  • Wire brush and corrosion spray

Steps:

  1. Locate the battery (hood, trunk, or under the seat).

  2. Disconnect the negative (-) cable, then the positive (+).

  3. Remove the old battery carefully.

  4. Clean terminals and apply corrosion protection.

  5. Install the new battery: connect positive first, then negative.

  6. Secure with the hold-down bracket.

  7. Some vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, etc.) require battery registration with a diagnostic tool.

  8. Start the car and check charging system voltage (should read 13.5V–14.5V).
